Nellie Irene Phipps, a beloved sister, mother and grandmother, died Saturday, Nov. 8, in Bakersfield. She was 91.
Mrs. Phipps was born on Feb. 16, 1912, in Dustin, Okla. and married Robert L. Phipps in May 1930. Because of the Depression's lingering effects, Nellie and her father, William, moved with her children, Bobby, Hazel and Benjamin, to Delano in 1942 looking for work.
As a manual laborer, she toiled in row crop fields in northern Kern County to support her children. She retired in Modesto from Campbell's Soup Co., and in 1976 her children brought her to Bakersfield to be closer to extended family and to care for her.
Mrs. Phipps was a devout Pentecostal who wrote poems about her relationship with God. She loved to travel, garden and read Scripture, but her true passion was her family.
She was preceded in death by her son, Bobby, in 1999. She is survived by her sister, Laura; daughter, Hazel and son, Benjamin; as well as 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.
