Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Phillips, the Rev. Lonnie Phillips and the Rev. Bill Wade officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Dumas. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle.
Mr. Phillips was born in Bartlesville, Okla. He graduated from Dumas High School in 1954 with football honors. He received his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University in 1959 and his master's degree from West Texas State University in 1974.
He coached football at Sam Houston Junior High School in Borger from 1960 to 1967, he was head football coach at Fritch High School from 1967 to 1972, head football coach at Hart High School from 1972 to 1976 and won bi-district and was named Coach of the Year in 1974. He was head football coach at Friona High School from 1976 to 1980.
He joined Horace Mann Insurance Co. in 1980 until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of Horace Mann Millionaire Hall of Fame. He married LaRue Barnett in 1999 at Dumas. He moved to Amarillo three years ago and was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Dawn Jackson of San Antonio; a son, Lonnie Phillips Jr. of Sardis, Ky.; four stepsons, Delton Cleveland and Brian Cleveland, both of Lubbock, Gene Cleveland of Amarillo and Brent Cleveland of The Colony; a stepdaughter, Denise Casey of Harrisburg, Pa.; his mother, Maxine Phillips of San Antonio; a sister, Jaylene Griggs of San Antonio; a brother, Larry Phillips of Hong Kong; and nine grandchildren, Clint, Kevin, Amy, Zelma, Daniel, Mollie, Marcus, Abigail and Sydney.
The family suggests memorials be to Faith City Mission, 401 S.E. Second Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101.
The family will be at 2110 S. Washington.
