L. D. Phillips has gone to Heaven today to be with the Lord, his wife Eleanor, and many dear friends. He was born in Foss, Oklahoma, to Lora Allen and Mark Phillips on July 8, 1922. He moved to Bakersfield and graduated from Kern Union High School and after a stint with the U.S. Army, he met and married Eleanor Winkler in 1948. They raised two daughters. He worked for PG&E, Southern California Gass and Sunland Oil Refinery where he retired in 1984. He loved working in his wood shop creating treasures for all of his loved ones, traveling, and spending time with his friends.
He is survived by one brother, Orvel Phillips of Oklahoma; two daughters, Cheryl Peterson of Texas, and Eldean Phillips of Bakersfield. He was adored by his two granddaughters, Karen and Marci Peterson of Texas, and many close friends made throughout his life who were drawn to his gentle humor and enthusiasm for "just being neighborly."
Our deep gratitude extends to all who knew and loved him and were so very present with us during these final days of his journey Home. Special thanks for such loving care to all those at the Kern Medical Center Direct Observation Unit and Teresa Rodriguez of Agape Home Care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to International Christian Ministries (ICM), P. O. Box 9071, Bakersfield, CA 93389-9071, or New Life Center, 4201 Stine Road, Bakersfield, CA 93313.
