Joan Leta (Hodges) Phillips

July 10, 1930 ~ March 29, 2010

Joan Leta Hodges Phillips, 79, of Tomball, Texas, formerly of Anadarko, passed away on March 29, 2010 at the Tomball Nursing Center in Tomball.

A meeting of celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13 at the First Baptist Church of Anadarko.

She was born on July 10, 1930 near Anadarko to Everett and Elsie Hodges. She was raised in Anadarko, graduated from Anadarko High School [Class of 1948] and worked at the telephone company there.

She and James Phillips were married in June of 1950 and subsequently, lived in Oakland, Calif., while he completed a Navy obligation; then, Norman and Culver City, Calif;, finally settling in Dallas, Texas, where Mrs. Phillips studied art under a local artist.

She was natural in the techniques of color, style, perspective and arrangement, so that she quickly became an assistant teacher and helped other students to master the arts as well.

She became an accomplished artist and was active in the Dallas art culture, displaying her creations in many bazaars and exhibits. She painted in oils and acrylics and was also involved in ceramics and flower arranging. This was all in addition to being a full-time wife, mother and homemaker, in all of which, she excelled.

She was full of energy and had a strong work ethic. Their home was always spotlessly clean and well decorated. She liked to joke that she could make the biggest messes, but always cleaned them up.

She had a strong opinion on almost any subject and was happy to share them with you, but didn't require that you agree with her.

Mrs. Phillips was also very active in Lake Highlands High School band activities, in which both her daughters were members.

Upon her husband's retirement, they lived in Colorado Springs and traveled extensively in their RV, visiting mostly U.S. National Parks, their children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her sister, Jean Shipman [Class of 1951]; her husband of almost 60 years, James; and their daughters, Shirlene Tina Peel and Michele Julia Trouard, as well as grandchildren, Cory Nicole Phillips, Julia Ann Peel and Robert James Peel.
