Memorial services for Mary Glenn Phelps, 93-year-old Weatherford resident, will be held Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Chuck Horton officiating. Services are under the direction of Lockstone Funeral Home. The family strongly encourages masks to be worn, unless you are fully vaccinated. If you choose not to wear a mask for medical or other reasons, please attend virtually. The church will have a live feed of the service on the Facebook page "Weatherford Fumc."
Mary Phelps died peacefully on July 13, 2021, at the Weatherford Regional Hospital with some of her children by her side. She was born Mary Glenn Hale, 93 years, 8 months and 6 days ago in Stratford, Texas, on November 7, 1927. She was the ninth of 12 children born into the incredible family of William Benton Hale and Ethel Viola French. The stories of her childhood revolve around the love of a huge family; how they worked and prayed together; sang, danced and played together. There was illness and hardship at times but they all made it through the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression and World War II.
Mary attended all 12 years of school at the public schools in Goodwell, Oklahoma, and graduated from Goodwell High School in 1945. She loved school and played basketball and ran track. She worked alongside all her siblings and parents on their farm. After she graduated from high school, she attended Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College in Goodwell. There she fell for the love of her life, Jack Phelps. They married on May 28, 1946, in Guymon, Oklahoma, and shared life for over 69 years until his death in 2016. Leaning on each other through every step of the way, there was nothing they couldn't do together. They lived in various small towns in the Panhandle; then Stillwater, Weatherford, and Alva and finally settled in Weatherford after Jack retired from teaching. Everywhere they lived, Mary filled their homes full of warmth and love.
Mary loved God in a way that taught and reminded everyone around her what true faith means. She lived her life so full of grace that everyone around her couldn't help but see God's love in her. She was "Sweet Mary" and "Angel Mary" to the end.
Mary is reunited with her beloved Jack. She is survived by three daughters, Jackie Duncan and husband David of Weatherford, Oklahoma; Judy Zehr and husband Joel of Weatherford, Oklahoma; Janet Phelps and her husband David Landreth of Houston, Texas; one son, Jon Phelps of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; three grandchildren: Jordan Zehr and his wife Elizabeth Zehr of Austin, Texas, Logan Phelps of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Erin Phelps of Seattle, Washington; one sister, Fern Webster of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents; six brothers, Aaron, Ernest, Ralph, Bud, Mose and Ted; four sisters, Pat, Thelma, Viola and Wilma Jo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
