Born October 26, 1935, Marion Dale Phelps, 77, the son of Archie and Opal Phelps, he died Monday, May 7, 2012, in Grace Living Center in Chickasha. His grandparents were Lee and Asa Hubbard and Jerome and Maggie Phelps.
For a number of years he lived in Chickasha and was manager of the Auto Zone Store. Mr. Phelps enjoyed fishing and going to garage sales.
He was in the United States Marine Corps from being stationed at San Diego, California as a drill instructor at Camp Pendleton from July 29, 1954, to May 1973. He served three tours in Japan at Camp Hansen, Okinawa and two tours in Chu Lai, Vietnam during the first major confrontation with the North Vietnamese in “Operation Starlite” on the Batangan Peninsula south of Chu Lai in August 1965. He was in Vietnam during the “Tet” Offensive in February and March 1968. Phelps received six individual awards and four service awards during his 18 years of duty.
Survivors include a son, David Wayne Phelps of Oceanside, California; a daughter, Marian Gale Herndon; four granddaughters and one grandson; three brothers, Bob and his wife, Dora of Del Rio, Texas, Bill and his wife, Judy of Perryton, Texas, and Don and his wife, Sheri of Stilwell; one sister, Dorothy Sheff and Charles Boatwright of Lexington; several cousins and many friends.
The obituary included a photo of Mr. Phelps.
