Reginald Gerald Petty age 80 of Newcastle passed away on May 26, 2023 in Oklahoma City. “Jerry” was born on November 16, 1942 to Reginald B. Petty (RB) and Virginia Petty. Jerry grew up in the Bridge Creek area, but graduated with the Newcastle Racer class of 1960. While in school he played basketball and baseball, and raced his hot rod every weekend only to blow the engine up each time.
On September 3, 1960 Jerry married the love of his life, Mary Mason and together they started a family. Jerry drove a truck for “Scrivner” delivering groceries until they opened their grocery store in 1974. It began as Petty & Son and changed the name to Petty’s IGA, and eventually Petty’s Apple Market. He later purchased another grocery store in Chickasha in 1985. For 56 years the Petty family ran the stores with pride, providing quality service to Newcastle, Chickasha, and the surrounding areas. After retiring, Jerry worked for Newcastle Public Schools as a maintenance supervisor. Jerry served the community in many capacities, he was Mayor of Newcastle, and was instrumental in establishing Newcastle’s first High School football facility. In 1987 Jerry was awarded the Award of Excellence for Community Service from IGA. Jerry was a big supporter of the 4-H and FFA programs. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and PaPa who will be dearly missed.
