Stephen Wesley Pelley of Pottsboro, Texas passed away on Sunday April 9, 2017 at his home surrounded by family and friends at the age of 66. Stephen had been fighting a very aggressive cancer for the last 45 days.
Stephen was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on June 13, 1950 to Haywood Pelley and Alice Donahue. He grew up in Haddonfield, NJ. At the age of 18 Stephen joined the Army as a Tanker. While serving he met and married Bernadine Zajicek of Rogers, TX and was married for 9 years during which time had twin sons Jason Pelley of Burleson, TX and Jeremy Pelley of Temple, TX. He later changed his MOS to EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) and served his country for 20 years. Stephen retired as a Master Sargent. He served his country though Desert Shield and Desert Storm and received multiple decorations and badges to include Explosive Ordnance Disposal Master Badge.
Stephen was a proud member of many service and charitable organizations. He was a proud Elks and would tell everyone he lived just 27 steps from the back door of the ELKS lodge. Stephen was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, the VFW, as well as the AMVETS. He was a friend to many. His sense of humor will be what is most remembered by his friends and family.
Stephen is survived by Jason Pelley and wife Michelle of Burleson, TX, Jeremy Pelley and wife Stephanie of Temple, TX. Six grandchildren Landon, Baylee, Jacob, and Abigail of Temple, TX and Ryan and Madison of Burleson, TX. Siblings Sharron Fulton, Susan Filtrante, Robin Lancaster, and Jeff Pelley as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews who he loved and adored.
Stephen is predeceased by his parents Haywood and Alice Pelley and sisters Jeanette Callahan and Judy Ziegler as well as his brother George Pelley.
Funeral services will be held at Cunningham Funeral Home in Colbert, OK on Friday April 21, 2017 at 10a.m. with Bryan Saffle officiating followed by a Military honors graveside service at DFW National cemetery at 1:30 PM. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday April the 20th at Cunningham Funeral Home in Colbert, Oklahoma.
Memorials may be given to ELKS Lodge Lakeside #238. The family of Stephen wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Guardian Hospice and the ELKS Lodge lakeside #238 for everything they have done to help us through this difficult time.
