Services for Ambert “Leo” Page, 79, of Springfield, Colorado were held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 29 in the Springfield High School Gymnasium.
Born July 31, 1935 at Marsden, the son of Ambert Lee and Thelma Forbes Page, he died Tuesday, August 26, 2014.
Leo attended Meadowbrook School. He was a member of two High School State Championship basketball teams before attending Lon Morris Junior College and receiving a degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. After graduating, Leon went on to be a teacher and basketball coach. Leo started coaching basketball at Russett in 1957. The rest of the time he coached in Colorado at the following schools: Kim, Pritchett, Burlington, Walsh, Crowley County and Vilas.
Along the way, Leo coached four teams that made the state tournament: Kim 1960 unplaced, Walsh 1970 consolation champs, Walsh 1971 state champs and Walsh 1972 state champs. Leo had teams that set state records along the way. The 1971 Walsh team set five state records in Class A state tournament. Those records include: Dwight Bryan most points in a game, “42 pints” and 88 points in the tournament; most points scored in a class A tournament game “Walsh 105” (Walsh 105 – Arickaree 61); “193 points” the highest combined score for two teams in a state championship game (Walsh 101 – Arriba 92); “101 points” scored is a record for a state championship game; and in 1971 the Eagles averaged 100.3 points for all games in the state tournament. As a side note the team scoring records are for all classifications and still stand today. Leo also coached the top three scoring teams in state history, 1971 Walsh 94.3, 1971 Walsh 85.4 and 1970 Walsh 84.8 points. Other honors for Leo include “All State” coach 1972 for the south team that won 91-79 and coach of the year in 1971 and 1972. His hobbies were playing cards and dominoes, watching the Nuggets, Broncos and Thunder, and reading about those teams online.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents; a brother-in-law, Roy Murphy as well as a longtime friend, Tom Gooden.
Survivors include three children, Tom Jacobs and Gary Page, both of Pritchett, Colorado and Cindy Jacobs of Yukon; grandchildren, Whitney Jacobs of Eaton, Colorado and Ryleigh Jacobs of Windsor, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Jersey Speck of Eaton and Ryker Jacobs of Windsor; a sister, Erma Lee Murphy of Gainesville, Texas; nephew, Roy Lee Murphy of Canyon, Texas; niece, Sue Murphy of Denver; stepbrother, Lewis Foster and wife, Jo of Marietta and stepsister, Peggy Sykora and husband, Butch of Marietta.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society either directly online or by way of the funeral home.
