Laveta Owens, 84 year old Woodward resident, died at her home Friday, June 10, 2022. Services will be held at the Fort Supply Baptist Church on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Todd White officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Laveta Rae (Sis) Wisner Owens was born July 23, 1937 in Mooreland, Oklahoma to Hershel and Lucille (Atkinson) Wisner. She was raised on the farm north of Fargo, along with her brother and two sisters. She was a true farm girl who helped her dad farm, gather eggs, and milk cows.
Laveta was proud to be a Fort Supply Bulldog, and often talked about how good her high school basketball team was. When someone asked her how many games they won, she would say "none, but we sure were good!"
At a fund raising box supper when she was a freshman in high school, her box was purchased by Ronnie Owens. This was the beginning of 70 wonderful years together. They were married December 28, 1954 in Woodward, and made their home on the Owens family farm, in the Kibby Community, north of Fort Supply. They were blessed with two sons, Johnny and Danny. Much like her childhood, she helped Ronnie on the farm. She drove a tractor, worked cattle, raised chickens, hauled hay, all while maintaining a near perfect home.
She was everyone's caretaker. If a family member was ill, she would be the one to be at their side. This was especially true of her grandkids. When they felt bad, she wanted them at her house so she could take care of them. She had a very special gift with babies and could quiet any crying infant. She had a back-and-forth rocking rhythm that worked miracles.
One of her most favorite pastimes was attending all the ball games for her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. She may have even gotten a little rowdy at a few of them. Laveta was a wonderful cook and the ultimate hostess. Country singer, Larry Gatlin, was even a special guest in her house in 2012.
Laveta also enjoyed collecting antiques, staying at the Colorado cabin, and an occasional visit to the casino. She especially enjoyed playing cards and board games with her mother, sister, and cousins. The most important thing to Laveta was being surrounded by her family.
Laveta was a member of the Fort Supply Baptist Church. She helped with Bible School for many years, sang in the choir, helped in the nursery, and helped with church dinners.
Laveta is survived by her husband, Ronnie, of the home, two sons Johnny and Dianne Owens of Buffalo, and Danny and Rhonda Owens of Buffalo; her grandchildren Kristin Zollinger and husband, Ben, of Mooreland, Ashley Owens of Woodward, Lance Owens and fiancee Elizabeth of Tulsa, and Megan Thomas and husband Matthew of Buffalo; great-grandchildren Rylin, Brady, Kenna, and Lucas Zollinger, and Emma Thomas. She is also survived by her Aunt Faye Purvis, Uncle Keith Atkinson, brother-in-law Donnie Holloway, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her father and mother-in-law John and Lena Owens; a brother, Gene Wisner; and sisters, Phillys Holloway and Thurlene Davis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Supply Baptist Church, with the funeral home accepting all contributions.
