Madelyn Joyce O'Neal, age 94 years and 13 days, passed away peacefully at her home in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 24, 1930, in Hastings, Nebraska, to Lawrence Bloomdahl and Edith (Gumm) Gibson.
Madelyn grew up in Frankfort, Kansas, and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1948. She attended Cosmetology School in Manhattan, Kansas, before marrying Robert O'Neal on October 1, 1950, in Frankfort. Together, they shared 36 years of marriage.
Madelyn’s career reflected her creativity and work ethic. She began her professional life as a telephone operator for Southern Bell in Frankfort before relocating to South Carolina and later returning to Manhattan, Kansas. She ran her own beauty shop from her home in Manhattan and, in 1972, opened Madelyn’s Flower Shop in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, where she became a beloved fixture in the community.
A dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Locust Grove, Madelyn was known for her artistic talents, including painting, gardening, and quilting. She was an avid reader with wide-ranging interests and found joy in sewing and creating beautiful things. Madelyn was also an exceptional cook, and her family and friends will fondly remember her signature dishes, including her chocolate sheet cake, pot roast, deviled eggs, and homemade spaghetti sauce.
Above all, Madelyn was known for her unconditional love and devotion to her family and friends. Her warmth, generosity, and infectious spirit will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Madelyn will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially her full-time care givers, son Mark and grandson Jake who tirelessly took care of her for these past two years. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
Madelyn is survived by her children: Marsha (O'Neal) Michel and husband Mike of Youngstown, Florida, and Mark O'Neal of Locust Grove, Oklahoma; 3 grandchildren: Shawnda Maria Joyce Barnes and husband Calvin of Peggs, Oklahoma, Jake O'Neal and fiancé Amanda Clark of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, and Crystal Michel-McLemore and husband Brad of Panama City, Florida; 3 great-grandchildren: Tyler Barnes and fiancé Jessalyn Jenkins , Ethan Barnes, and Rylie O'Neal; She is also survived by one great-great-grandchild: Laramie Barnes; 2 brothers: George Gibson and wife Rosalee of Topeka, Kansas, and Mike Gibson and wife Paula of Topeka, Kansas; 2 sisters-in-law: Vickie Gibson and Sandy Gibson; Madelyn is also remembered by her special friend, Virginia Chaffin of Locust Grove.
e was preceded in death by her parents; and 1 great-granddaughter, Caylee Christine Barnes.
The family would like to thank Madelyn’s Campassus team of Jennifer, Nicole, and Megan. They would always seem to manage to share a laugh or two in their time of helping.
Funeral services to celebrate Madelyn’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, with Reverend Steven Stanglin officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the Antioch Cemetery in Frankfort, Kansas.
