Mary Elizabeth Sommers Offutt, faithful servant, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. She blessedly spent her last few days playing with great grandchildren and being cared for by her two granddaughters. A native Kansan, and so proud of it, Mary was born in Eudora, Kansas on January 7, 1925. She was educated in De Soto, Kansas.
Mary was married to Carl Eugene Offutt in Eudora on May 24, 1943. After Carl's honorable discharge, they lived in Palm Springs, California for three years before moving to make Dewey, Oklahoma their home. In 1957, she and Carl started C.E. Offutt Roofing Co. She was a founding member of the Pilot Club of Dewey and a longtime active member of the Dewey First Church of God. Over the years, she worked for the First National Bank of Dewey, Jane Phillips Hospital and Stumpff Funeral Home. She retired in 2005 and moved to Ponca City to be near family, where she found her new church family at the First Presbyterian Church and where she was serving as a Deacon. Mary was a member of the Ponca City chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Mary loved cooking above all other activities and she truly saw her cooking as a calling. She also loved gardening, sewing, ironing and meeting new people.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her father Fred, her mother Alma, her brother Fred and her sister Hazel.
She had three sons, two of whom preceded her in death; Carl E. Offutt II and Frederick Lee Offutt.
Survivors include: Her son, John R. Offutt and his wife Diane, of Oklahoma City, Grandchildren, Jessica Offutt Michael and Duane Michael of Oklahoma City, Kelly Lynn Offutt of Oklahoma City, John Edward Offutt of Tulsa, and Melvin Offutt of Dewey, Great Grandchildren, John R. Michael and Grace Elizabeth Michael of Oklahoma City.
