SSGT Robert E. Oakes (Ret)
February 12, 1936 ~ December 24, 2022 (age 86)

SSGT Robert E. Oakes (Ret), 86 of Lawton, Oklahoma passed away on December 24, 2022 after a long illness.

Robert was born February 12, 1936 to the late Julia (Blanchard) Oakes and Richard Oakes in Portland, Maine and attended Auburn Schools.

Robert (Gunny) Oaks was a proud marine. He served his country for twenty-two years. During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal with 5 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60-, Vietnam Cross of Galantry with palm and frame. Pistol Expert Badge (2nd award) Rifle Expert Badge, Meritorious Unit Citation, Presidential Unit Citation.

Robert was employed at the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department from 1979-1986.

He was preceded in death by his father Richard Oakes, his mother Julia Oakes, daughter Roberta Oakes, and step-son James Thibodeau.

Robert is survived by his wife Cindy, his son Robert Jr., daughter Theresa Pennington, step children Joseph, John and Jeff Thibodeau and numerous grand children and great grand children.

A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
