On March 31, 1956, he was united in marriage to his "sweet thing" Mary Anne Circle, and to this union four girls were born. Two months ago, their family had a big celebration to commemorate their 65th wedding anniversary.

Jake started working at the age of four, milking cows, then jockeyed race horses as his youth ended. He graduated from Cleo Springs High School in 1952. He later joined the Army and was stationed in Germany for two years. When he moved back to Kiowa, Kansas, he was a farmer, rancher, hunter, fence builder, card player and gardener.

Jake was known for his smile and love of people, which was shown by his generosity and daily distribution of donuts, vegetables, and eggs to Kiowa and surrounding communities.

Jake is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; four daughters, Connie and Butch Rooks of Kiowa, Kansas, Laurie and Rock Shelite of Kiowa, Kansas, Lisa Newton of Kiowa, Kansas, and Shelly and Mitch Merklein of Wichita, Kansas; two sisters, Rose Gillig and Judy Matheny; two brothers, Clark (Joyce) Newton and Robert Newton; eight grandchildren, Robyn (Casey) Whitaker, Heather (Brad) Grabar, Candi (Justin) Maddux, Heath (Liz) Shelite, Todd (Rachel) Shelite, Holly Rooks, Kali (Joe Faircloth), Erin (David) Nicholson.

Besides his parents, Jake is preceded in death by four sisters, Ila Brandt, Ineta Rader, Ida Opperman, and Joyce Swart; three brothers, Lloyd Newton, Bill Newton, C.A. Newton; two infant siblings and granddaughter, Lauren Merklein.

Celebration of life service for Jake will be Thursday, July 22, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Kiowa, Kansas. Burial with military honors will be in Riverview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa. There will be viewing at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. with family present 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
