Funeral Services for Verlen Eugene Newman, 71, of Fairview will be 11:00 am, Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Fairview Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Ricky Chance and Reverend Chuck McKinney officiating. Arrangements by Fairview Funeral Home Inc..
Verlen was born to Gene and Goldie Newman in Tonkawa, Oklahoma on January 14, 1946 and passed away August 4, 2017 in Fairview, Oklahoma. He had three brothers and two sisters. He grew up mostly in Ponca City and met his wife there in January 1965. He asked her to go with him to the basketball game that night and she said yes. Little did she know that his friends had bet him a dollar that he couldn’t get Janice to go to the game with him. He won that dollar and they were married seven short months later on July 30, 1965.
He and Janice had three children, Joe Allen, Terry Dale, and Laura Ann. They also have two daughters-in-law’s and a son-in-law. Verlen and Janice were active members of the Nazarene Church in Fairview, OK. As they acquired grandchildren, they began introducing them to Christ at a very young age. They have been blessed with twelve grandchildren, two of which are married, and have six great-grandchildren. Verlen began a tradition with his grandchildren that have carried on including all small children he met. He carried an abundance of quarters in his pockets to pass out to the young people he came across. His pockets were never empty and every small child he met would get a couple of quarters to put into their pocket. I would say that there are plenty of small children that will always remember this small act of kindness. That is who Verlen was; he loved with all his might and gave with all his heart.
He loved to go fishing and camping with family and friends. He loved to take Janice to Branson any chance he got. We all know he also loved to give everyone he met a hard time, but everyone knew he would drop whatever he was doing in a heartbeat to have the opportunity to help someone out. Anytime anyone mistakenly told him goodbye, he would gently correct them by saying, “It’s not goodbye, it’s I’ll see you later”.
Verlen is survived by his wife Janice of the home, two sons, Joe and Sue Newman of Ohio and Terry and Crystal Newman of Enid, and one daughter, Laura and Frank Mccroskey of Colorado, two brothers Arlan and Bert Newman, two sisters, Janice Woodward and Sharon Bennett, twelve grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his mother Goldie, father Gene, brother Harley, and granddaughter Alexandria.
