Carol (Warder) Nagel

Carol (Warder) Nagel
March 19, 1928 ~ September 25, 2016

Carol Warder Nagel, 88, a longtime resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, died Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Jane Phillips Medical Center. She was born on March 19, 1928 in Springer, New Mexico to George L. Warder and Alice Dobie Warder. Carol graduated from high school in Springer and shortly after, eloped to San Diego, California with her lifelong love, Robert Orin Nagel, who had enlisted in the navy. They were together until Bob's death in 1999. While he was in the service, Carol went to the University of Colorado and graduated with a degree in music. Her first job was teaching piano to returning servicemen under the GI bill.

In 1959, Bob took a job in So Paulo, Brazil. The eight years she spent there with her husband and three daughters were some of the happiest of her life. She took full advantage of the opportunity to learn Portuguese and came to love Brazilian culture. Shortly before her death, it gave her such pleasure to watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics held in Brazil and sing along to the Brazilian National Anthem. Carol loved to travel. When asked to give the value of an item, she would often say, "That is the cost of a trip to Paris."

In the 1970's, before Bob retired, they bought a farm on the outskirts of Bartlesville and raised sheep. She even took at Sheep Production class at OSU with the young agricultural students. Carol learned to weave and her family continues to enjoy the many beautiful pieces she created. She always had artistic leanings exhibited in the clothes she wore, the books she read and the many projects she chose to occupy her time with.

Towards the end of her life, Carol lost most of her vision to macular degeneration. As with most other challenges, Carol did not let this obstacle inhibit her from pursuing her many interests. She learned how to use adaptive programs on the computer and became an avid "reader" of recorded books and magazines. She was a lifelong learner who valued knowledge for its own sake. She walked to OLLI classes offered at the Bartlesville Public Library; participated in a book club for decades and was active in the Women's Network of Bartlesville.

Friends were central to Carol's life. She was always interested in hearing about the latest developments in their lives and participating in their next adventure. She was a gracious hostess. As her daughters were growing up, she would often correct their table manners by saying, "Would you eat that way at the President's table?"

Carol is survived by her immediate family, daughter, Elin Nagel and husband, David Covington of Durham, NC; daughter Cassie Nagel and partner, Mark Manuel of Bartlesville; daughter, Cecily Nagel of Seattle, WA; grand-daughter, Adrienne Covington of Raleigh, NC; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Howard Pennington of Rogers, AK; sister-in-law, Shirley Jewell of Douglas, AZ , brother-in-law Jimmy Nagel of Des Moines, IA; ex-son-in-law John Eric Gibson of Seattle, WA and many special nieces and nephews.

Carol did not want a funeral or memorial service. Her ashes will be taken to the graveyard in Raton, NM where her husband and many other family members are buried. If you would like to do something in honor of Carol, she had a special place in her heart for the Concern Child Learning Center in Bartlesville (www.concerncares.com), City Ride of Bartlesville (www.cityofbartlesville.org) and the Oklahoma Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (www.olbph.org).

The family wishes to thank all of the people who lovingly cared for and visited Carol, especially in the last few days of her life. Your love and generosity has touched us deeply.
