Robert "Bob" Myers, 84, retired General Superintendent of Plant Operations for Zinc Corporation of America (formerly National Zinc), died at his Dewey home at 12:30PM Sunday, May 1, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on September 3, 1931 in Bartlesville to parents Ralph and Rose (Elgert) Myers. Bob attended schools there, and earned the nickname "Rapid Robert" for his speediness on the Bartlesville College High Track team. A natural athlete, Bob also excelled in basketball, and was a receiver for the Col-Hi Wildcat football team. On a very fateful Friday the 13th one August, Rapid Rob met Iris Cartwright while roller-skating. A courtship ensued and the couple were later joined in marriage on the first day of June, 1951.
Bob graduated from College-High with the Class of 1949. He then went on to further his studies at the then Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater. He had joined the ROTC there, and the day after he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering he became a Commissioned Officer in the Chemical Corps of the United States Army, proudly serving his country from 1954 to 1956.
Bob was always very handy, and enjoyed building, construction, and working with his hands. He was often remodeling or building something � he even built a couple of houses, including his home in Dewey. On three separate occasions Bob was involved with Habitat for Humanity in Indiana, working with that organization helping to build many homes for those less fortunate. A man of great faith, Bob was always very active in church. He had close ties with three different Church of God congregations. He was head of the Building Fund Drive and was the Building Chairman for the First Church of God in Dewey when it was first constructed, in addition to serving as youth leader. He also served in leadership and teaching positions at East Tulsa Church of God and his current home church, Courtyard Church in Skiatook.
Bob was a strong leader, and he always led by example. His family was always his top priority, and he loved and cherished them most of all. He was an excellent husband and father. He truly treasured each and every one of his children and grandchildren, especially attending their sporting events, being their number one fan in the stands. The example he set, both in faith and family, will be forever remembered and admired by his friends and family. His legacy will live on, not only in the homes and churches he helped build, but in the hearts and minds of those that knew and loved him.
Robert A. Myers is survived by his wife Iris of Dewey, who had been his faithful and devoted companion for almost 65 years; his three children, Scott Myers and wife Linda of Dewey, Melissa Smith and husband Doug of Skiatook, and Amy Thompson and husband Kenneth of Catoosa; 8 grandchildren, Andrew and wife Megan Myers of Tulsa, Necia McClendon and husband Robbie of New Orleans, LA, Kim Myers of Tulsa, Skyler Smith and wife Alyssa of Canton, GA, Samantha Smith of Skiatook, Sheaffer Smith of Skiatook, Taylor Thompson of Catoosa, and Nathan Thompson of Catoosa; 2 great-grandchildren, Caedmon and Riley Myers, both of Tulsa; sisters Sharon Newcomb and husband Ray of Woodstock, GA, and Bettie Jo Lagal and husband Gene of Bartlesville. Bob was preceded in death by his sisters Maxine Moss, Glenna Vaughn, and Pauline Morris, and also by a granddaughter, Sunnee Leigh Smith.
A memorial service will be held for Bob on Friday, May 6, 2016 at 11 o'clock in the morning at the First Church of God in Dewey.
Bob's family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's name be made to the Bartlesville Area Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1284, Bartlesville, OK 74005, or to the building funds at either Courtyard Church (Courtyard Church on 75 fund, courtyardchurch.com, 1501 E. 156th St N, Skiatook, OK 74070 ) or the First Church of God, 222 S Osage, Dewey, OK 74029.
