Memorial Services Celebrating the life of Mrs. Miriam "Mim" Virginia Massey Moss, 99, of Enid will Be Held Monday June 4th, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. In St. Mathews Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Stephen R. Samples officiating. Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.
She was born on the Massey Ranch to Raymond Joseph Massey and Lula Gail Meaders Massey on May 30, 1913. Her father raised registered Herford cattle. Her mother was known for reading every book in the Sun City Library.
Gail insisted all her children should go to college, which they did. Mim Graduated from Sun City High School in 1933 where she was a state champion in track and field events. She received a degree in primary education from Emporia State Teacher's College in 1939. She also helped raise their brother Kent Meaders Massey and was the bread baker because she was very patient.
She worked in Albuquerque New Mexico as a waitress for the Harvey House but did not consider being a "Harvey House Girl" of any historic significance. She was the 1st - 8th grade teacher in Etna, Kansas.
Richard E. Moss became her husband in Medicine Lodge, Kansas in 1941. Richard was a wheat and cattle farmer in Coats, Kansas. Their children include: Margaret Jane Moss-Hilligoss, Virginia Gail Moss Wille, Edward Kelley Moss and Patricia Anne Moss Moore. Her grandchildren include: Elizabeth Ann Hilligoss Allen, George Kelly Hilligoss, Christine Virginia Moore and Alan Joseph Moore. Great grandchildren include: Milo Daniel Allen and Noah Andrew Allen.
After Richard died in 1971, she managed the farm until her son Ed finished college. She moved to Wichita where she was a house mother at the Institute of Logopedics. Later she became a nanny.
In the 1990's, she lived in Cleveland, Ohio and cared for the grandchildren AJ and Christy.
She moved to Enid and lived with her daughter Margaret in 2000.
She spent the summers in Helena Montana with her daughter Virginia.
She was an RSVP Grandmother with Marianne Gray's first grade class at Coolidge Elementary School for many years.
She was active in the water aerobics class at the YMCA and attended St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.
Special friends include June Wright, Jeanette Priest, Dorothy Sanders, the nurses and doctors at Bass Hospital and the drivers at the Transfer. Local family includes the Andrew Allen family, John and Margaret Hunter, Micheal Hunter, and Margaret Moss-Hilligoss. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Hylon Hope Massey Howard and brothers Joseph and Kent Massey.
She is survived by her sister Minnie Lee Massey Ives and Edith Louise Massey Harrison. She is also survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends and family.
Her passions in life were: travel, Native American Art, reading, collecting sea shells, rocks, antique dishes and glasswork, and art and letters of young children. She also played the piano.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Enid Public School with Brown-Cummings serving as custodians of the funds.
