Evelyn Morehart, age 91 of Breckenridge, Texas, died Sunday, January 25, 2009, at The Woodlands Assisted Living Center in Eastland. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 27th, at Morehart Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Charles West officiating. Burial will follow in the Breckenridge Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.
Evelyn Marie Chaffee was born on December 10, 1917 in Ingersoll, Oklahoma to parents, Adna Emory Chaffee and Florence Henderson Chaffee. She grew up on her family's farm in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma and graduated from Ingersoll High School in 1935. She went on to graduate from Northwestern State Teacher's College in Alva, Oklahoma in 1939. Her graduate work followed at Oklahoma State University. Evelyn married Jewel Knetzer Morehart on July 4, 1940 in Alva, Oklahoma. They later settled on the Morehart Family farm in Cherokee where they raised their two children. Evelyn retired in 1977 after teaching school for over 24 years in Garber, Dacoma and Cherokee. She taught high school English and drama. As a teacher she also enjoyed sponsoring many extracurricular activities such as coaching state championship debate teams and directing one-act plays. Evelyn was held with high esteem as "The Bud Wilkinson of High School Debate," a title donned upon her by the Oklahoma City newspaper, the Daily Oklahoman, for producing eight state championship debate teams.
In 1985 the Moreharts moved to Breckenridge from Cherokee to be near their son and grandchildren. Evelyn had a green thumb and enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a member of Breckenridge Garden Club and the Retired Teachers Association. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Evelyn is survived by one son, Jack Morehart and wife, Carrol of Breckenridge; one daughter, Jo Anna Morehart of Republic, MO; three grandsons, Mark Morehart and wife, Sonya of Breckenridge, Matthew Morehart and wife, Aimee, also of Breckenridge and Micah Morehart and fianc�e, Jaclyn White of Round Rock; and three great grandchildren, Gracie, Jake and Luke, all of Breckenridge.
