John Jeffery Moon, 85, a longtime resident of Bartlesville, and current resident at Town Village in Tulsa, died Friday, November 30, 2012, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
John Jeffery Moon was born February 2, 1927 in Bombay, India to Ralph M. and Lorene (Jeffery) Moon. He spent his early childhood in India where his father was engaged in engineering sales for an American equipment company. The family returned to the U.S. when John was five years old and took up residency in Kansas City, Missouri.
John completed his elementary and high school education in Kansas City, graduating from Southwest High School in 1944 at the age of 17. While in Kansas City, he was active in church and scouting activities achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He furthered his education by attending Michigan Technological University, graduating in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. A year later, he earned a Master's in chemical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. During college, John was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Blue Key, Alpha Chi Sigma, and was a Standard Oil Fellow.
In the fall of 1948, John began work as a chemical engineer with the research and development department of Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. From October 1950 to October 1952, he served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah where he was engaged in the testing and evaluation of chemical, biological and radiological warfare weapons systems. On April 12, 1952, during his army service, John was united in marriage to Lois Irene Longfellow. They were posted to Spartan accommodations at the Tooele Ordinance Depot about 50 miles over a mountain range to Dugway Proving Ground.
In 1952, the couple returned to Bartlesville to start their family and where John worked as a process engineer for Phillips' Research and Development. In 1964, he joined Phillips International, moving his family to Antwerp, Belgium, where he was Development Manager for Petrochim, N.V. Throughout his seven years in Belgium, Petrochim was developed into a major petrochemical complex. During this same time, he was also a founding member and Chairman of the Board for the Antwerp International School, and served two years as Chairman of the American Protestant Church in Antwerp.
In 1971, the family returned again to Bartlesville where John worked as a branch manager for the Process Division of Phillips. In 1974, he was appointed Planning Manager in Natural Resources Group for Energy, Minerals, Gas and Gas liquids. In 1979, he assumed the position of Division Manager of Environment and Consumer Protection and remained in that position until his retirement in 1985.
John is a holder of 17 U.S. Patents in the field of polymer and hydrocarbon processing. He was past president of the Bartlesville Chapter of the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, as well as a past president of the Bartlesville Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. From 1979 to 1985 he was a member of the Environmental Committee of the American Petroleum Institute and a member of the Environmental Quality Committee of the National Association of Manufacturers.
Since his retirement, John enjoyed his family, his Westie dogs, traveling throughout the world, video photography, tennis, and numerous other civic activities including Meals on Wheels and the Bartlesville Biplane Expo. John's videos of family and his many travels around the world will be forever treasured. His intelligence, sense of humor, and compassion for others were unparalleled and will keep him in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Karen Moon in 1986; and brother, Ralph Moon in 2004.
John is survived by his loving wife, Lois; son, John Jeffery (Jeff) Moon, Jr., daughter-in-law, Jeanie and grandson Sean of Tulsa; son, Dr. Steven Moon, daughter-in-law, Debbie, granddaughter, Amy and grandsons, Michael and Christopher of Fayetteville, Arkansas; daughter, Linda Hollingsworth, son-in-law, Grant, granddaughter, Kara and grandson, Matthew of Tulsa; sister, Mary Alice Moon of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph Moon of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and three nieces and a nephew.
Services to honor John will be at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 801 S.E. Washington Blvd., in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM. Services have been entrusted to the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home.
