Monty Dale Montgomery Sr.

July 30, 1932 ~ June 14, 2010

Monty Dale Montgomery Sr. was born in Seneca Missouri on July 30th, 1932. He died in Muskogee Oklahoma on June 14th, 2010, just shy of his 78th birthday.

Though the place of his birth and the site of his death are only separated by 120 miles, his life spanned the globe.

After graduating from Seneca High School in 1950, Monty spent a little time enjoying his youth and adventures with his friends. In January 1952, along with his friends Cobb Brady, Jerry Smith, Bud Young and Bob Langford, Monty enlisted in the Navy.

Monty served his country during the Korean conflict and was discharged in November of 1955. Also in 1955, Monty married his first wife, with whom he bore 4 children; all boys, in 19 years of marriage. Monty D. Montgomery Jr., Mark D. Montgomery, Scott J. Montgomery and Sean J. Montgomery all live in N. Texas.

After his discharge from the Navy, Monty joined his dad, Roy B. Montgomery, and Uncle, Sam Montgomery, in the family water well drilling business; Montgomery Brothers Drilling. In addition to drilling water wells, they drilled some shallow oil in Northeastern Oklahoma under contract for others; always planning on drilling a few of their own. Monty's lifelong, but unrealized, dream of tapping into that legendary oil strike earned him the nickname of "earl" Montgomery among close family and friends, in recognition of his desire to become an "earl" tycoon.

Eventually, Monty struck out on his own and, after a successful stint at National Cash Register, formed his own drilling business; Alcor Drilling, which became the largest drilling company in Southwest Missouri, if not the state.

In the mid 70s, life took Monty in a different direction. Alcor Drilling was dissolved and he wound up with Chicago Pneumatic Drill Division as their International Marketing Manager. In this capacity, Monty became a globe-trotter; selling portable water well drilling equipment in almost every country on the map; from witnessing the collapse of the Shah's regime in Iran to India and Pakistan; Australia, Ireland, England, Turkey and places he's just as soon forget. He learned of the healing powers of margaritas, sunshine and siestas in Mexico, Central and South America. In these years of traveling all over the world, Monty developed strong, lasting friendships that endure today.

In the mid 80s, Monty again became an entrepreneur and independent businessman; forming Mustang Equipment and Montgomery Drilling (still chasing the dream of striking "earl"), in Muskogee. By now he had remarried and settled in a location not too far from his childhood home.

Monty traded on those relationships domestically and abroad to buy and sell drilling equipment and lend his many years of knowledge and expertise to drillers, both young and old. This venture was successful and he helped many of his old & new friends prosper in the process; many successful drillers in the country and the area can link their successful start to equipment and knowledge gained from Monty Montgomery.

For the last 8 years, Monty has been a dedicated and loving caregiver to his second wife of 33 years, who finally succumbed to a devastating series of strokes in September of 2009.

After a brief bout with Cancer, Monty passed quietly on Monday, June 14, 2010. He was surrounded by friends and family that provided love, care and comfort in his final hours. The outpouring of love and expressions of sympathy from friends from around the globe are appreciated by the family and a testament to a man that lived his life with kindness and honor.

Monty is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mildred Montgomery, his brother, Gayland Montgomery, his beloved uncles Ralph and Sam Montgomery and his wife, Arlene Montgomery.

Monty is survived by his sister, Linda and his 4 sons, Monty Jr., Mark, Scott and Sean and 7 grandchildren, Max, Melissa, Haylie, Conner, Cresah, Cobey and Colton.

The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to the staff at Eastgate Village in Muskogee for their care, affection and outpouring of love with Arlene and our Dad.

Graveside services under the direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, June 18, 2010 at the Seneca Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 pm, Thursday at the funeral home.
