Charles Mohr
September 30, 1939 ~ April 14, 2020

Charles Mohr was born in Clinton, Oklahoma to Olin Mohr and Alta Smith Mohr on September 30, 1939. He graduated from Putnam High School in Dewey County, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Master of Music Education degree from North Texas State University. During his early career, Charles taught elementary and junior high choral music in Lawton public schools and served as Choral Music Director at Eisenhower High School in Lawton.

Attracted by the power of music and arts education, he was then employed as the first Music Specialist in the Oklahoma State Department of Education, and became the Director of the Arts in Education program.

Charles served as the first Director of the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, and later became the Regional Coordinator with the John F.Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. After returning to the Oklahoma Department of Education, Charles was named Director of the Oklahoma Learn and Serve America program, which engaged K-12 youth in community service and linked their service to academic learning. He received the Governor's Award for Arts Education in 1984 and the Oklahoma Lions Humanitarian Award in 2007.

Charles was an active member of Western Oaks Christian Church in Oklahoma City, where he most recently served as an Elder. He previously served as Music Director, Worship and Fellowship Committee Chairperson, Membership Co-Chair, Member of the Chancel Choir, and Volunteer for the WhizKids program.

Charles is survived by one daughter, Jenny Mohr, and her husband, Matt Parker and their children, Anna & Will Parker, Houston, Texas; and one son, Patrick Mohr, and his wife, Chizuru Matsumoto Mohr and their daughter, Lilian Rose, Hong Kong. He is also survived by one sister, Jenna Droke, and her husband, Bill; niece, Jennifer Northcutt, and her husband, Dr. Barry Northcutt and their children, Eric and Hanna, Edmond, Oklahoma; and niece, Lissa Foster, and her son, Jacob.

Charles was a generous and dedicated educator, and had an uncanny ability to put others at ease in any situation as a chef, gardener, musician and friend. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a celebration of Charles Mohr’s life will be held at a later date, to be announced.
