Earl LeRoy Mixon

Earl LeRoy Mixon
September 5, 1929 ~ January 29, 2015 (age 85)

Earl LeRoy Mixon, 85, of Norman, passed from this life Thursday, January 29th, 2015 at the Norman VA Center after a long struggle with diabetes and Parkinson's Disease.  Mr. Mixon was born September 5th, 1929, in Sand Springs, OK to parents Albon Roy and Nina Jewell (Martin) Mixon.   

 Upon graduating from Sand Springs High School, Earl enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard and later graduated from Officer's Candidate School as a 2nd Lieutenant.  Pursuing his passion of flying, he earned his wings as an Army fixed wing and helicopter pilot. Over the course of 39 years, his military assignments included multiple tours of Active Duty, command of an Army Reserve Company in Tulsa, command of the 356th Transportation Company in Norman, part of the 95th Division in Oklahoma City, and finished his service with the 122nd Division in Little Rock, AR in 1989 as a full Colonel. 

 From 1967 to 1988 he was supervisor of the Army Aviation Facility at Max Westheimer Airport in Norman.  In addition, two other facilities were added to his position in Arkansas and Louisiana.  He retired in 1988 of Federal Civil Service as a GM-14.  His retirement years with family and friends included travel, ham radio, fishing, computers, and aiding his grandchildren attending OU.

Earl is survived by his wife Jo Ann of almost 47 Years, his daughter Donna Jean McCollam and husband Michael McCollam, four grandchildren, Kevin McCollam of Moore, Bryan, Cathy and Stephen McCollam of Tulsa, brother Kenneth and his wife Jessie Mixon, and nephew Stephen Mixon of Tulsa. 

His family expresses a special thank you to the caretakers at the Norman VA Center who cared for and especially cared about Earl.  They are deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. 

Visitation will be from 1 pm to 4 pm Sunday, February 1st, at Havenbrook Funeral Home.

Services for Earl will be at 2 pm on Monday, February 2nd, at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jesse Bufford, a very special friend, officiating. 

Interment will be in the Fort Smith National Cemetery in Arkansas.
