Kathryn (Whitehead) Mitchell
March 10, 1921 ~ June 11, 2007

Shawnee resident since 1963 Kathryn Mitchell, 86, died Monday June 11, in Edmond.

She was born March 10, 1921, in Slaton, Texas, to Alfred and Vallie Whitehead.

She graduated from Slaton High School in 1938 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Tech University in 1946. After college she taught English in a Spanish speaking school in Sonora, Texas.

In 1950, while working in Lubbock, Texas, she met and married Joseph Mitchell. They were married 43 years until his death in 1993.

An accomplished artist and an avid reader, Kathryn was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Virginia Griffin; and a grandson, Jared Maupin.

She is survived by sons, Fred Mitchell and wife, Kristen, of San Diego, California; and Robert Mitchell and wife Rachel, of Edmond; grandchildren, Lynn Mitchell-Parrish and husband, John Michael; James Mitchell and wife, Andrea; Nicolette Bailey and husband, Brendan; John Paul, Katie, Lauren and Stephanie Mitchell; great grandchildren, Angel, Alexander, and Justin Mitchell and Ryan Bailey, and many other close family members.

Her sharp wit and warmhearted sense of humor will be greatly missed by all.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday in Slaton, Texas, at Englewood Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Englund Funeral Service in Slaton.
