Memorial services for E.J. “Tom” Metcalf, 81, of Enville, were held at 2 p.m., Friday, February 25, in the Enville Community Church with the Rev. Don Keizor officiating. Arrangements were directed by Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.
Born November 14, 1923, at Batesville, Arkansas, the son of Vernon and Dessie Webb Metcalf, he died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at his residence at Enville.
A resident of the Enville community for the past 22 years, he moved there from California. Mr. Metcalf was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Air Force three years. During his tour of duty he flew 50 missions and was shot down three times. He and Patricia June Leggett were married August 23, 1969, in Reno, Nevada. Mr. Metcalf worked for Pacific Telephone Company of Napa, California, retiring after 32 years of employment. He was an avid golfer, shooting a hole in one after golfing 40 years. Mr. Metcalf also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include a wife, Pat Metcalf of the home; two sons, Tom Metcalf of Des Moines, Iowa and Dale Metcalf of California; two daughters and son-in-law, Sandy and Bill Hunter of Marietta and Kimberly Vidales of Enville; a brother, Carl Gene Metcalf of California; two sisters, Velta Mae Vinson and Veda Brewer both of Yuba City, California; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hartwell Metcalf; and a sister, Reatha Gaither.
Honorary pallbearers were Rudy Steiner, J.C. Harris, Ron Mana, Sipriano Vidales, Billy Don Brewer, Carl Gene Metcalf and Bill Hunter.
