Earl Metcalf was born on January 9, 1933, to Everett and Cora Lee (Berkley) Metcalf and passed away peacefully at his home in Fairview on October 30, 2020. Earl grew up in Keota and attended school there graduating from high school. On January 4, 1952 Earl joined the United States Navy. After basic training and being assigned to San Diego, California. He returned home and married the love of his life LaVerne Baxter on October 14, 1952. To this blessed union was born two sons and one daughter. Earl served in the Philippines during the Korean War. While he was serving in the Navy, LaVerne and the family remained in San Diego.
After Earl was honorably discharged from the Navy on 15 December, 1955. He moved to Fayetteville Arkansas, where he obtained his BS degree from the University of Arkansas. After receiving his degree, he worked for DOD, and Earl and his family moved to Massachusetts, then Illinois, Iowa, Utah, then to Ft Smith, Arkansas. Earl then started working as the Curator of Sequoyah's Home, near Sallisaw. Oklahoma and they moved to Curator's home in Akins, Oklahoma. Earl loved his new career, and they soon moved to Cleo Springs and then Fairview, when he transferred and become the Curator at the Sod House.
He was named Executive Director of the Oklahoma Historical Society, and Earl moved to Oklahoma City while LaVerne stayed in Fairview so the children could finish school. He Loved attending basketball and football games in Fairview, and as a member of the Lions Club, often worked the concession stands and loved visiting with people. He loved people, loved this town & loved Lions Club.
LaVerne moved to OKC with him after Dave graduated high school. After retiring from Oklahoma Historical Society, they moved back to Fairview. Then LaVerne took the Administrator job at the nursing home in Waynoka, and Earl helped with the business end, so they moved there. Earl was very involved with the Historical Society there, and served as President and was on the Woods County Industrial Development Authority, to bring industry and other interest to that area. He was always interested in Northwest Oklahoma.
They then moved back to Fairview, which was home to him. He loved buying & remodeling old houses! He also took the Pastoral Position at the Church of God in Dacoma. On weekends they stayed at the parsonage in Dacoma, & were in Fairview during the week. He retired from that LaVerne began to exhibit signs of Alzheimer's. He took care of her until she went into the Okeene Nursing Home in 2017.
Earl loved to travel, was a voracious reader, enjoyed westerns on TV, and even 6 weeks before his death, was going out to eat at least once a day. He loved his grandchildren, and loved taking them on trips. He was absolutely crazy about his great-grandchildren, and loved spending time with them as well. He and LaVerne loved going to flea markets, and he continued to love to visit historic sites in OK. The last time his daughter took him to Woodward, they had to stop, again, at the Gloss Mountains. He was absolutely fascinated by Oklahoma's rich history. He had to stop attending Lions because of LaVerne's declining health, oh how he missed it!
