Genevieve was born April 20, 1948 to John B. and Elsie Mae (Ratzlaff) Kahn in Enid, Oklahoma. She passed from this life Sunday, August 4, at the Fairview Hospital after a long battle with cancer.
Genevieve grew up in Fairview where she went to elementary school. She attended Jr High at Oklahoma Bible Academy and graduated from Fairview High School with the Class of 1966. Following graduation, she attended Gray’s Beauty College and was a hairdresser for more than 50 years. Braids were one of her special skills. She could master most any kind of braiding and enjoyed it. Being the kind hearted person she was, Genevieve was slow to raise her prices. Elderly ladies came to her for shampoo and sets and as they were widowed and on fixed incomes, she would only charge them five dollars. With her experience, the going rate was much higher. She owned and operated her own shop in Fairview and recently worked for the Fairview Fellowship Home beauty shop doing the resident’s hair.
Genevieve often stated that she had lived a rough life style until she found the Lord. She attended church at the First Assembly of God in Fairview and often had hymns or praise music playing in her shop. She witnessed to many about her faith while doing their hair.
Genevieve married Gary Lynn Shoemaker on April 23, 1968.The couple made their home in Fairview and they were blessed with two beautiful children, Leah and Lynn. Later she would marry Larry Merriman. She endured the loss of both children at young ages. She was strong, stubborn, funny and sometimes gruff but she loved people.
