Agnes Elizabeth Mebane was born August 24, 1923 to Helm Freeland and Elizabeth Buckner, both natives of Oklahoma. She was raised in Bakersfield and attended Washington Jr. High, BHS, and East High. She would walk from her house at 1511 Niles St. to BHS and then walk back home after school.
She began attending East High School her junior year when it opened. She was an excellent athlete playing baseball, basketball, soccer and tennis. She was in the first graduating class of East High. After high school she attended Lufkins Business College and was employed at the Southern Pacific Railroad as a Stenographer.
In 1940 Agnes met Kenneth Mebane. They were married December 31, 1943. They lived on the Olcese Ranch just east of Bakersfield where they ran their cattle operation up until this day.
They have been married for over 60 years. She was a member of the Kern County Cowbells from 1948 - 1998. She was President in 1954 and Cattlewoman of the year in 1997.
Agnes was a devoted wife and mother. She spent her life taking care of her family. She was a wonderful, faithful wife, supporting her husband, Kenneth, in his success in the cattle business. They worked hand in hand together for all those years in a wonderful marriage. She was an unselfish person giving herself to helping other. She gave to many charities and people in need. She was a strong believer in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She went to Heaven trusting that God had prepared a home for her there.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; her children, Kenny, Mark, Karen and Robert Mebane; grandchildren, Melissa Singer, Jacob Mebane, David Mebane, Traci Pugh, Jennifer Mebane, Sarah Mebane, Zackery Freeborn, Taylor Willmott, Robert Willmott, Matt Wooster, Mike Cooper, Kris Cooper and Nick Cooper, great grandchildren, Lucas and Eislea Mebane, Quirt, Carson and Allison Mebane, Kyli, Megan and Cody Pugh, Meagan Cooper and Sydney. She has many nieces and nephews and wonderful friends.
Services will be held at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Ave., at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 28, 2004. Pastor Larry Wood will officiate at the memorial service. Donations may be made to the Kern County Cattlewomen's Association Scholarship Fund.
