Thomas Elmo "Bebo" Meadows

May 28, 1927 ~ March 22, 2011

Thomas Elmo "Bebo" Meadows, another member of the "Greatest Generation", passed from this life on March 22, 2011 at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. He was born May 28, 1927, in Brookside, AL to Philip and Ruth (Shaffer) Meadows, who preceded him in death.

His family moved to a farm near Tipton, OK in the early 1930's. He attended Hess, Weaver, and Tipton schools. Like many of the WWII generation patriots, he lied about his age and at 15 years old, volunteered for U.S. Navy service on June 16, 1942. He served in the Southwest Pacific Theater as a Navy Seabee. The Seabees are the Navy's Construction Force whose motto is "We Build, We Fight". He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945. On July 7, 1950, he again volunteered for Navy service and saw action as a member of a 5 inch gun crew during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. George K. MacKenzie. He received awards for Korean Service, United Nations, Navy Occupation, China Service and National Defense. As a Seabee, the Navy taught him his lifelong occupation in construction as a heavy equipment operator.

After the war, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area where he resided and helped build the Interstate Highway system in Northern California.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff at the VA Medical Center including Doctors Harper, Kistler, Chen, Raj, Hsu, Castl, and social worker Lisa Dipko. Also, Crystal Sims, his most trusted aide, Ms. Jean Davis, RN, in ER, and numerous others who so devotedly cared for him over the years.

He is survived by sisters Marge Mullins, Davalene McDonald and husband Bob, Marcia Nettleton and husband Eugene, all of Oklahoma City, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11am, Saturday, April 16th at Ford Funeral Service Candlewood Chapel.
