Joyce Margaret (Jones) McKay

Joyce Margaret (Jones) McKay
August 11, 1926 - February 21, 2012

Joyce Margaret (Jones) McKay, 85, of Choctaw City, OK went home to be with her Lord and Savior, on February 21, 2012.

Joyce Margaret (Jones) McKay was born on August 11, 1926 in Thackerville, OK to George Henry and Margaret Virginia (McGill) Jones, the oldest daughter in a family of twelve children. She attended school in Thackerville, OK.

She married Melvin Steve McKay on September 2, 1944 and they had 4 children. She always maintained a loving home, and provided unwavering support to her husband and family.

Joyce graduated from cosmetology school in 1962, and was a business woman who ran her own beauty shop for years with many loyal customers.

Joyce had many hobbies she excelled at including: quilting, gardening and painting. She was an accomplished quilter and liked the saying "When life gives you scraps" make quilts". Her hands worked magic with scraps of fabric. She received many State Fair ribbons, but most importantly everyone given her quilts treasured them. Her quilts were the ultimate sign of love, with hard work and talent she was able to turn ordinary material into beautiful treasures to warm and hug those she loved. She also shared special quilting bee moments with us that we will remember forever, allowing us to be involved in the transition from pieces of material into the beautiful visions she had.

She also had a natural talent for growing flowers and vegetables. Her garden was bright with a variety of flowers and the birds were always abundant due to her care. Her vegetable garden always provided a delicious bounty for the table including the best home grown tomatoes. Joyce won many State Fair ribbons for her special preserves and pickles as a testament to her green thumb. She had a poem in her kitchen by the window for years to the view of her garden that read: " The Kiss of the Sun For pardon. The song of the birds For mirth. One is nearer God"s heart in the garden, Than any where else on earth."

Joyce was an accomplished painter and many of her works filled her home. She was always ready for a new project, knowing that with persistence and hard work she could accomplish anything. Joyce was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. Joyce was also an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Choctaw, OK. She touched the lives and hearts of many people. Her sky blue eyes were always welcoming and she accepted and loved all she brought into her life. She will be remembered for her caring and generous spirit, her wonderful sense of humor, and her creative artistic talents.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Margaret Jones; her loving husband of 50 years Melvin Steve McKay; son Morse Lee McKay, four brothers David, Earl, Jack and Ted Jones.

She is survived by two sons Dale McKay and Ross McKay, and one daughter Janie Tapp; five grandchildren Leslie Tutty, Stephanie Tapp, John McKay, Neal McKay and Melissa McKay; ten great grandchildren Sara, Kinzee, Rozlyn, Neal Jr. McKay and Austin, Julia, Shelby, and Parker Hodges and Nathan and William Tutty; three sisters Ruth Johnson, Sally Garcia, and Dolly Bone; and four brothers George Jr. Jones, Val Gene Jones, Bill Jones, and Bob Jones.
