A memorial service for Mary Jane McIlvain, 86, of Woodward will be 3 p.m. Monday at Frist Christian Church, Woodward. Dr. Kipp Wolfe will officiate. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Arrangements are by Billings Funeral Home.
She was born June 10, 1919, in Oklahoma City to Rev. Carl and Ica Cheney Covey and died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005, at Integris Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma City.
She graduated from Duncan High School in 1936. She graduated from Phillips University in 1940 with a degree in elementary education. She began her teaching career September 1940 in Woodward.
She married Pat McIlvain March 1, 1941. They made their home in Woodward.
She taught 40 years, with 30 in the classroom teaching fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh grades. She served as a vice-principal four years. In 1968, she was chosen Woodward County Teacher of the Year. She was a member of Oklahoma Retired Teachers, Oklahoma Cattle Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Sorosis and Beta Sorosis. She volunteered for "Reach for Recovery", and was a charter member of Woodward Educational Foundation. She was a member of First Christain Church, directed vacation church school, Christian Womens Fellowship, taught a Wednesday morning study group and served as elder for many years.
Surviving are her husband, Pat of the home; one daughter, Ruth Leierer; one son, Mike McIlvain; one sister, Betty Goodness; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First Christian Church, Woodward, or Woodward Educational Foundation.
