William C. "Bill" McCarthy

William (Bill) C. McCarthy, 86, formerly of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, passed away on January 28, 2014 in Lawrence, Kansas.

Bill was born October 20, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri to Alice and Henry McCarthy. He received his primary and secondary education in Kansas City and upon graduation from the Kansas City, Kansas Junior College in 1946, entered the U.S. Army. While in the army, he served as a radio repairman with the Signal Corps in Korea. After being discharged from the army in 1947, he entered the University of Kansas where he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.

In 1950, he married Dorothy Boldt of Kansas City, Kansas and took up residence in Rochester, New York where he was employed by Eastman Kodak. In 1952, Bill accepted a position with Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville and completed the remainder of his career in the Research and Development department with retirement in 1985. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1988.

Later, Bill married Martha Jean Kolich of Kansas City, Kansas. Together they traveled the world extensively and spent time at Grand Lake with family. They volunteered with Friends of the Park and with First Presbyterian Church, where they were long time members. Bill also volunteered with Boys and Girls Club. He was a member of Kiwanis and the American Legion.

Bill is survived by his wife, Martha Jean; son Greg McCarthy; daughter Terri Shafer; granddaughter Tiffany Shafer; stepson Richard Kolich; and stepdaughters Martha Jones and Mary Ann Hale.

The family suggests memorials be sent to the First Presbyterian Church at 505 SE Dewey, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, 74003.
