Theodore Paul Matson, Jr. longtime resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016. He was 87.

The service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 30, 2016 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church with Rev. Cindy Robertson Riedel and Rev. Robert Montgomery officiating. Care of the family is under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Ted was born on Jan 5, 1929 to Ted Paul and Lola Wallis Matson in Ponca City, OK. He graduated with a BS in Geology at the University of Oklahoma in 1949 and then received his Masters in Education in 1951 while teaching at Binger, OK. Upon graduation of both Betty and Ted P. Matson they were married on August 19, 1951 in Clinton, Oklahoma and moved to Ponca City where they both taught school. Ted taught Math and Science at East Jr. High. Ted then commuted back and forth to earn his Masters in Chemistry at Oklahoma A&M while serving as a Captain in the Army Reserve. Ted worked as a chemical engineer in surfactants and detergency's for most of his career and has earned several patents as well as the Alderdice Award for Contributions to Science.

Ted was a member of the University of Oklahoma Delta Chi, The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band, The Oklahoma RUF/NEKS, Oklahoma University ROTC, Se Fi Class at St. Paul's, Stephen Ministry, Meals on Wheels, Sooner Club, Quarterback Club, OU Tip Off Club, and an avid SOONER Fan forever. Ted was the tennis pro at the Ponca City Country Club for many years. Ted also was a long time member and volunteer with the Ponca City Noon Lions. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in 1951 and moved their membership to St.Paul's United Methodist shortly after the charter of the church.

Ted loved to travel all over with Betty. Some of their favorite destinations were Hawaii, Colorado and wherever their grandchildren were. One of Ted's biggest joys was the love of their three boys and their ten grandchildren. Ted loved sports and coached his three sons in basketball, football, and baseball and loved it so much he carried his passion to help his son Brad coach Griff and Chase in Basketball and Baseball. He was known as Coach Grandpa.

Ted is survived by sons, Bill and his wife Tess from Saipan, Mariana Islands, children P.W, Robin, Morgan, Ciaralyn, and Betty, Bob from Nashville, Tennessee and his children, Will and Stuart, Brad from Ponca City, Paula from Trenton, Nebraska and their children, Griffith, Emma, and Chase.

Ted was preceded in death by his father, Ted Paul Matson Sr, mother, Lola Matson, from Clinton, Oklahoma.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma and Diabetes Solutions of Oklahoma (DSOK).
