Wolfforth, Texas - Gene Arthur Mathia, age 89, was born on February 28, 1935, in Turkey Ford, Oklahoma. He peacefully passed away on January 1, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to family, education, and community. Gene was a familiar face in the field of agricultural economics, having retired from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Washington, DC. He served as a professor at North Carolina State and at Texas Tech, where he held the position of department chairperson in agriculture economics department.
Gene earned his PhD while simultaneously raising a family and working at BF Goodrich tire company. This dedication to balancing work, family, and academic growth is just one reflection of his determination and strong work ethic.
Gene was not only committed to his professional career but also to his family and personal life. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, including golfing, camping, and spending quality time with his loved ones. Gene was a proud Mason, actively involved with the Grove Masonic Lodge, showcasing his commitment to community service.
Gene is survived by his loving children: Bobbie Jobe and husband Carl, Karen Crow and husband Morris, Linda Williams and husband Larry, Edward Mathia and wife Kristi, Timothy Mathia and wife Sara, and Mark Mathia and wife Michelle. He was a cherished grandfather to 14 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 22 great-grandchildren.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Edward Mathia and Nada (Harrison) Mathia, his wife Barbara Mathia, and his six siblings: Raymond Mathia, Irene Bergman, Otis Mathia, Thelma Bennett, Janet O'Bryant, and William Mathia.
A visitation with family will be held on January 10, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home located at 711 S Main St, Grove, OK 74344.
