Dennis Jay Martens passed from this life on March 13, 2020. He was born on April 8, 1950 in Fairview to Edward L. and Bertha May (Wichert) Martens.
Dennis graduated from Fairview High School in 1968 and continued his education at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, OK graduating in 1973. While in high school Dennis played football and was a pole vaulter on the track team winning a state championship his senior year. He continued and was successful at pole vaulting while in college. In 1971 Dennis married his high school sweetheart Sandie Burghart. After graduation from college he joined his Dad in farming northwest of Fairview.
In 1976 Blaine Edward joined their family. What a blessing he was to Dennis and Sandie. In 1978 their second blessing Brent Evan arrived. Dennis was an avid outdoorsman enjoying all kinds of hunting and fishing activities. Dennis shared this love of the outdoors with his two sons and then later in life with his two grandsons. Dennis was a sports enthusiast and a devoted fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma City Thunder. Dennis retired in 2016 and he and Sandie enjoyed traveling in their RV. Their most memorable trips were to New York City and Niagara Falls. They followed their grandson’s soccer teams from Nashville to Denver.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Dale. He is survived by Sandie of their home; sons Blaine and wife Karla of Crescent, OK, Brent and wife Courtney and grandsons Preston and Paxton of Edmond, OK; sisters Carol and husband Larry Church of Homestead, OK and Shannon and husband Ed Mayfield of Fairview and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 19, 2020 at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church with Pastor Marlin Hiett and Pastor James Suderman officiating.
