Fern (Newman) Markwell

April 16, 1927 ~ October 20, 2008

Services for Fern Newman Markwell, 81, of Marietta, were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 22, at Marietta’s First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Stan Sullinger officiating, assisted by the Rev. Tommy Higle. Interment followed at 3 p.m. in Crestview Memorial Park, Wichita Falls, Texas.

Born April 16, 1927 at Thackerville, the daughter of Elmer Martin and Ola Lynch Newman, she died Monday, October 20, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Markwell returned to Love County to make her home in 1975 after living all over the world as a military officer’s wife. She and Charles Pim Markwell were married January 17, 1944 in Kansas City, Kansas, and he preceded her in death on October 29, 1973.

As a resident of Marietta, Mrs. Markwell devoted her time to many community projects, including serving 15 years as a member of the Big Five Board, raising funds for the brick walkway to the north entrance of the Love County Courthouse, and many activities with the R.S.V.P. She was appointed to the EMS Board in 1992 and that same year was instrumental in fundraisers for a new Love County Library. The next year, the Groundhog Chili Supper was started to raise funds for the Courthouse Christmas Lights, of which she was very proud. Mrs. Markwell was also instrumental in the construction of a 20-unit apartment complex for the elderly in Marietta, which has appropriately been named Fern Markwell Senior Housing. In addition, she has devoted many hours to the complete renovation of the Love County Military Museum, now a historical site on both the state and national level. Mrs. Markwell was a member of Marietta’s First Baptist Church.

Survivors include twin daughters and their husbands, Pima and Ben Battershell of Austin, Texas, and Kima and Stan Sullinger of The Woodlands, Texas; five grandchildren, Leeann Sullinger McDonald and husband, Andrew, David Charles Battershell, John Markwell Sullinger, Kara Pim Battershell and Samuel Newman Battershell.

She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, David Battershell, John Sullinger, Samuel Battershell and Andrew McDonald; Dr. Tom O’Connor and Neil Robnett.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Love County Military Museum or the Courthouse Christmas Lights, in care of the funeral home.

This obituary included a picture of Mrs. Markwell.
