John Markham Killed - - From the Woodward Bulletin

About 9 o'clock Tuesday night, February 2nd, 1898, Ben Wolfarth shot and killed John Markham in this city.

The shooting took place just in front of Jim Gober's saloon on the main street of the city. Three shots were fired by Wolfarth and two of them took effect in Markham's left side. Either of the shots were fatal.

Both were cowmen and were supposed to be the best of friends, but rumor states that some slight trouble had occurred between them in the afternoon and that Markham had drawn a knife on Wolfarth.

The coroner's jury held an inquest on the body of Markham and found that he came to his death by the wound of a pistol in the hands of Ben Wolfarth, and the jury made a complaint and caused a warrant to be issued for his arrest.

Wolfarth is now in jail awaiting a preliminary examination.

Markham's remains were shipped to his sister, Mrs. Ferguson at Wichita Falls, Texas yesterday evening on the 4 o'clock train.
