Jayne Nash Montgomery Looney, age 83, of Purcell, passed away unexpectedly Monday, July 26, 2004, at Norman Regional Hospital. She became ill shortly after getting ready to go to work. Jayne was born on June 20, 1921 in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was the 2nd child of 5 children born to Dr. Mell A. Nash and Mae Clarke Nash.
Jayne attended and graduated from Chickasha Public Schools and the Oklahoma College for Women, where her father was the president. Following graduation she worked for the War Department in Washington, D. C. and Sen. Josh Lee of Oklahoma. While living in Washington she met and married William Hanna Mendenhall. To this union was born their daughter Nancy. After just 2 1/2 years of marriage, William was lost in a submarine during World War II.
Jayne returned home to Oklahoma with her daughter and later attended and graduated from the College of Law at University of Oklahoma. There she was a member of the first Law Review Board and a member of the Kappa Beta Pi and the Order of Coif.
She entered the practice of law in Edmond and then married a fellow lawyer, Henry H. Montgomery. They established a law firm, Montgomery and Montgomery, in Purcell, which has been in existence for over 50 years. They practiced law together until his death in 1998. Jayne was a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Council, a 50-year member of the McClain County Bar, the Oklahoma and the American Bar Association.. She was a fellow of the Oklahoma Bar Association and a fellow of the American Bar Association. She received the OBA Spotlight Award and the Neil E. Bogan Professionalism Award of the OBA in 1993.
She was the first woman associate professor at the US College of Law, the first woman Special Justice of Oklahoma Supreme Court, and the first woman elected to office in the OBA, vice-president of the Oklahoma Women's Lawyers Association.
Jayne was selected as the Purcell Citizen of the Year in 1971, and in 1994, she received the 2002 Women in Communication By-Liner Award, and was a 2001 finalist for the Journal Record Women of the Year. She was a member of the 2002 USAO Hall of Fame and the Chickasha Public Schools Hall of Fame.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell, where she served as Lay Leader, children's Sunday School teacher, and chairman of the Board of Trustees. She was a 50-year member of the Girl Scouts, and has been a troop leader and officer of the Council. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Kappa Kappa Gamma.
In 2001, Jayne married Robert D. Looney, Sr. of Oklahoma City. He is also a 50-year member of the Oklahoma Bar Association. They have resided in Purcell and Oklahoma City. In Purcell, Jayne had served as president of the Purcell School Board and was one of the founders and the first president of the Purcell Public School Foundation. She was a trustee of the Oklahoma Foundation of Excellence, the Purcell Municipal Hospital Foundation and the USAO Foundation.
She was preceded in death by: parents; husbands, Lt. Cmdr. Mendenhall and Henry Montgomery; daughter, Dr. Holly Montgomery Rose; brothers, David and Carl Nash.
She is survived by: husband, Robert D. Looney, Sr.; 2 daughters, Nancy Ford of Shawnee, and Sally Clayton of San Antonio, TX; 3 sons-in-law, William Ford, Craig Clayton and David Rose; 2 brothers, Capt. Norman C. Nash and wife of Alexandria, VA, Donald R. Nash of McAllen, TX; 7 grandchildren: Jayne Morris, Anne Wallace, Joseph Ford, Jennifer Lawson, Daniel Rose, Amy and Austin Clayton; 2 great grandchildren: William and Elizabeth Morris. Jayne is also survived by her husband's 3 children: Robert Looney, Jr. and wife, Anne, Carole Hill and Husband John, and John Looney. Also several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell. Officiating was Rev. Doyle Sharp and Rev. Rodney Newman. Memorials may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church, 211 N. 2nd St., Purcell, OK 73080, or to the Purcell Public School Foundation, 919 N. 9th, Purcell. Arrangements by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
