David Lichtenwalter, 59 year old Woodward resident, died Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2018 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Larry Masoner officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date.
David Russell Lichtenwalter was born on January 15, 1959 in Lexington, Nebraska to Russell Kent and Carolyn Colleen (Anderson) Lichtenwalter. His early years were spent in central Nebraska before the family moved to Humboldt, Kansas. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1977. He was married to Rhonda Ard in August of 1978 in Humboldt, Kansas. To this union two children were born, Steven and Stacy.
David began working at the Lenora CO-OP in Lenora, Kansas for his father, Kent. He then moved his family to Chattanooga, Oklahoma to manage the CO-OP there and later managed a CO-OP at Perkins, Oklahoma. Upon leaving Perkins, he went to work for Farmland Industries as a Fertilizer and Ag Chemical Specialist, serving northwest Oklahoma based out of Woodward and he later served in the same capacity for the Mooreland CO-OP. David worked for awhile for Leroys Ready Mix driving a truck. When he left there he went to work for Northwestern Electric delivering propane. He tried his hand at welding for BNSF Railroad. He spent the remainder of his working career at Woodward Iodine, retiring from there in January of 2017.
In 1996, he met the love of his life, Emily Lively. For the next 22 years there was never a day they didn't talk or be by each others side. Together they blended their families and eventually when their four children were grown, they established a home together. David took her kids and grandkids in just like they were his own and she did the same with his. He was The PaPa to all the grandchildren and all their friends.
He and Emily loved to travel. He was the best traveling companion because he was always up for a side trip if something looked interesting along the way. He longed to go back to Alaska and often commented that if he ever won the lottery, he was taking all the kids back to Alaska with him. He was a people person who never met a stranger. There was no such thing as a quick trip to Wal-Mart as he was recognized by so many people from his years of working in the Ag industry and propane delivery. His booming, deep voice announced his coming even before his friends turned around to see who was hailing them.
David loved spending time with his family, taking his grandkids to the gun range and teaching them gun safety, and watching them play softball. He was an Eagle Scout and was very active in the Boy Scouts as a youth and as an adult.
He is survived by his parents, Kent and Carolyn Lichtenwalter of Grand Island, Nebraska; the love of his life, Emily Lively of the home; two sons: Steven and Lori Lichtenwalter of Mooreland; Kurt Lively and Jarie of Edmond; one daughter, Stacy Biffle of Oklahoma City; one brother, Bruce and Jan Lichtenwalter of Waterford, Connecticut; one sister Barbara and David Unruh of Clarksville, Tennessee; nine grandchildren: Paige, Jerika, Sarah, Rebekah, Skyleigh, Blaire, Quintin, Rilea, and Kennedy; other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ralph and Opal Anderson, paternal grandparents, Russell and Joyce Lichtenwalter and son Ryan Lively.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Rheumatoid Arthritis research with the funeral home accepting the contributions.
