David Sherman Lewis
June 13, 1947 ~ February 6, 2023 (age 75)

David Sherman Lewis, of Heavener, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the age of 75. He was born in Shelby, Michigan, to parents, Robert George Lewis and Irene Virginia Lewis (nee Gingway).

David attended Holy Childhood School of Jesus Catholic Boarding School in Harbor Springs, Michigan, where he was an altar boy, and graduated from Hart High School in Hart, Michigan, in 1965. He served in a Pershing missile unit for the 4th Missile Battalion, 41st Artillery Regiment at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, and Schwabisch Gmund, Germany in 1966. He then received an Associate of Science Degree in Machine Tool Technology from West Shore Community College in Scottville, Michigan.

David enjoyed softball as a young man and was a lifelong outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, gardening, camping and hiking. He enjoyed music and movies from all eras and genres and took joy in quoting cult classics at appropriate and inappropriate times. His sense of humor was unbreakable, and he kept his family laughing to the very end. He travelled to Pow Wows throughout the United States. In his final days, he couldn’t wait to return to his cabin on the edge of the Wister Wildlife Management Area in Heavener, Oklahoma, where he enjoyed tooling around in his boat on Lake Wister. He was a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.

David was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother, Donald J. Lewis; and sisters, Marylin Kaye (Lewis) Quijas, Sharon (Lewis) Gonzalez, and Linda Christine Lewis. He is survived by his brothers, Robert, Steve, and Arnold; his sister, Joan Myrick; his four children, Melanie, Matthew, Karen, and Laureen; and his five grandchildren, Brandon, Cassandra, Kimberly, Wade, and Kelsey.

David will be interred with his family in Michigan this summer.
