Harold D. Leighton, 82, on Blanchard, Okla., received his wings on Jan. 30, 2007 after a brief illness.
He was born in Cushing, Okla., Feb. 9, 1924 to Harold Dale Leighton, Sr. and Ada Blanche Lathers Leighton. Harold grew up in Stillwater with his siblings James, Virginia and Mary.
Drafted in the U.S. Army in 1943, he served in artillery in England, France, Belgium and Germany. At the end of World War II he took a break from the service. In 1947 he continued his career in the Army, stationed 16 years in Germany, eight years in Ft Bliss, Texas and serving two tours in Vietnam. After 26 years he retired in 1971 as a Sergeant First Class.
In 1973 he started working again and went to work at the Oil Center and later the Medical Tower in Oklahoma City, retiring again in 1989.
Harold was married to Susanne Krifka of Germany for 10 years and together they had two sons.
On Aug. 31, 1973, Harold married Esther Hutchinson and with this union brought two families together. Harold and Esther lived in Oklahoma City for three years and moved to the Newcastle-Blanchard area in 1976.
He accepted Jesus as his Savior and was a born again Christian.
Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed gardening, tinkering around the home, reading and collecting war memorabilia.
He will be remembered as a good husband, a loving dad and grandpa, a wonderful uncle and a good friend and neighbor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James; and two sisters, Virginia and Mary.
He is survived by his loving wife, Esther of 33 years of the home in Blanchard; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Birgit Leighton of Oakland, Calif. and Bill and Janyce Leighton of Oklahoma City; two stepsons and wives, Dannie and Priscilla Hutchinson of Neodesha, Kan. and Chilles and Brenda Hutchinson of Newcastle; one brother, Ben Leighton and wife Amy of Okeechobee, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Lillian Leighton of Choctaw; nine grandkids; 14 great-grandkids, numerous nephews and nieces; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2007 at the Christian Life Assembly of God in Newcastle. Officiating was Rev. Chilles Hutchinson.
Memories by family. Pallbearers were Dannie Lynn Hutchinson, Jr., Donnie Lynn Hutchinson, Michael Tieu, Michael Robertson, Justin McVay and David George. Honorary pallbearers will be his great grandkids.
Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Newcastle.
