Jean Theodore (Lewandowski) Lee
January 31, 1922 ~ June 28, 2017 (age 95)

JT Lee, 95, passed away 28th day of June, 2017. He was born January 31, 1922 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Ed Lewandowski and Martha Kufahl.

He served in the US Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1944. He was staff weather officer and officer in charge in the US and in the south Pacific. 

He attended the University of Chicago and received his Masters in Geophysical Science in 1962.

He wrote over 50 technical articles in professional literature on severe storm forecasting/climatology, aviation radar interpretation, aircraft turbulence and wind shear, and Doppler radar studies. He was a scientist at NSSL for 42 years. His major contribution was discovering and documenting correlations between radar reflectivity and turbulence hazards to aircraft. In 1981, he received the Losey Atmospheric Sciences award for his invaluable contributions to flying safety. In 1982 he received the NASA Group Achievement Award for MSFC Doppler Lidar 1981 flight experiments.

Jean also was active in Kiwanis for over 45 years. He enjoyed working at the family farm. He built jumps and was course designer for local shows as well as the AQHA World shows. He was active in the church. 

He is survived by his wife, Martha Lee, his children Linda Glanville and her husband Steve of Cupertino, CA and Virginia Hames of Norman, Oklahoma, grandson John Cottengim of Moore, OK, brother Ed R. Lewandowski, Lakewood, CO, as well as many extended family and friends. 

Memorial services will be 2pm Wednesday July 5, 2017 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd, Norman, OK.
