Curtis Lay

September 21, 1915 ~ March 8, 2004

Funeral services for Curtis Lay of Melrose, New Mexico were held Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Melrose with Joe Bunce officiating. Burial was in the Melrose Cemetery under the direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis, New Mexico.

Curtis, the son of Dave and Violet Lay, longtime residents of Berlin, Oklahoma, was born September 21, 1915 in Berlin, Oklahoma and passed away Monday, March 8, 2004 in the Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, New Mexico at the age of 88 years.

He married Ora Blackburn on December 4, 1936 in Berlin. They later moved to California and in 1949 moved to Melrose where he farmed and ranched the rest of his life.

He loved to hunt and travel with his wife.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for more than 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eugene Lay; a brother, Elisha Lay; a sister, Eunice Plummer; and a great grandson, Logan Lay.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Ora, of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Violet and Harvey Widner of Duncanville, Texas; three sons, Curtis Lay, Jr. of Lubbock, Texas; Johnny and wife, Gentia Lay of Melrose; and Jim and wife, Donna Lay of Melrose; a sister, Violet Jane {Johnnie} Stephens of Elk City, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

His grandsons, Mike, Jeff and Todd Widner and Ritchie, Josh, Caleb, Jareet, Jeremiah and Levi Lay were his Pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Leslie Ray Riley, Lisa Avent, Joni Elliott, Laney Pierce and Liberty Sobey.
