Patrick Law

August 27, 1937 ~ January 17, 2010

Pat Law, CMDR USN Retired, died at the age of 72, Sunday morning, at home after a brief illness with cancer.

Pat was born on Aug. 27, 1937, at Sibley Hospital, Washington, D.C., to Mary and Wilburn Law.

Pat graduated high school [Class of 1955] in Anadarko, Okla., received a B.S. in mathematics from Oklahoma University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, commissioned Aug. 2, 1957, in the U.S. Navy, married his love and best friend, Ann Shelby, Aug. 4, 1957, and earned a master's degree in environmental science from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.

While in California, his two children, Jane and Bradford, were born.

Pat's Naval duties included navigating P5 Marlins, P-3 Orions, P2V Neptune, a tour as a meteorologist on Guam, a stint as a weatherman on the USS Intrepid, an instructor of celestial navigation at Holy Cross College, and later he flew C-130 Hercules.

Pat's family particularly enjoyed tours in Guam and Naples, Italy. These tours influenced the children and grandchildren to love to travel.

Pat is survived by his wife, Ann, daughter Jane, son-in-law George and their children, Ben, Patrick and David. Patrick and his wife Emily have Pat's three great-granddaughters, Emma, Evelyn and Eila. Son Brad and his wife Lisa, also have three sons, Ford, Riggs and West.

In Pat's last duty station, he served as the naval representative at Fort Ritchie, Md.

After retiring from the Navy, Pat was involved in a variety of careers, and settled into doing bookkeeping for Ann's business, The Yule Cupboard, for 20 years.

Throughout his adult life, Pat was an extraordinary husband and father. Ever concerned for planet earth and humanity as a whole, Pat has been a committed recycler for 40 years.

His patience and nurturing abilities were evident in his garden, where he raised a large variety of Hosta, as well as in his care of others through volunteer tutoring elementary students.

In all his endeavors and throughout his life, Pat has been characterized by his gentleness and care for others.

A memorial service is to take place at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at 1 p.m.

Pat's family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to www.hospiceofwc.org.
