Thelma Lucille (Wallar) LaRue was born on March 16, 1931, to Lucy and Lunda Wallar. She passed away on March 11, 2016, 5 days short of her 85th birthday.
She was born and raised in Guthrie and graduated from Guthrie High School. She met her husband Robert LaRue and they were married April 29, 1954. She and Robert soon moved to Stillwater where she worked at OSU while he went to school and she became pregnant with Robbye. And as all of you know, her married life was cut short just one year and a few months later when Robert passed away.
A few weeks later, Robbye was born and she spent the rest of her life working sometimes 2 jobs to raise her daughter on her own, working at the Oklahoma City Stockyards then eventually beginning a long career at Safeway/Homeland in 1972, where she worked as a buyer and brought home some of the latest and greatest snack foods to Randi and Ragen, which to them, made it the best job ever!!! She finally retired from Homeland approximately 20 years later.
Her retirement was short lived when she took a part time job she dearly loved, working for Dr. Gene Yost at his veterinary clinic in Crescent. She loved animals and made sure to let Dr. Yost know from the very beginning that she would not be “helping him put ANY of those babies down!!!!” She happily worked for him until her arthritis got the best of her and she officially HAD to retire. But the job that she truly loved the most was being a Grandma and GiGi. Anyone who knew her or spent more than 5 minutes with her, knew that too, And they knew that’s what she did best!!!! They were certainly the JOY of her life and her face would light up the minute they walked into the room.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucy and Lunda Wallar, her husband Robert LaRue and her seven brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Robbye Homesley of Norman, her granddaughters Randi Beaty of Dallas, and Ragen Cox and husband Kellen of Norman, her eight year old great-granddaughter Alex Beaty and two year old great-grandson Brady Cox, and numerous nieces, nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Presbyterian Church, Monday, March 14th, at 2 p.m. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made in her name to: Athritis Foundation 710 Wilshire Creek Blvd # 101, Oklahoma City, OK 73116
