He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in Andover, MA, where he was captain of the golf team. He earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from Yale University where he was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He then received a master's degree in classical civilizations from the University of Mississippi ("Ole Miss"). He then attended the Ole Miss medical school for a year where he served as president of the medical fraternity before enlisting in the U.S. Army and serving in the Korean War in a medical battalion.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to Ole Miss where he taught freshman chemistry and earned a master's degree in organic chemistry.

He married Martha Adrienne Haywood in 1957. They moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where he received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. Their first three children were born in Chapel Hill, NC. He began his career as an assistant professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia.

Their twin sons were born in Bartlesville. He coached little league softball and baseball for many years. He was also a member of Magna Carta.

His passion for running led him to complete two marathons, one of which resulted in an age-group record time. His incredible work ethic also drove him to work for the Tulsa World for 35 years. He enjoyed academic pursuits of all kinds, especially etymology.

He is survived by his wife, Adrienne, and five children: Eloise Kittleman; Taylor Kittleman; Liz Kissenberger (and husband, Robert); William Kittleman (and wife, Kim); and Whit Kittleman (and wife, Kay).
