Verna Lee (Nelms) Kelly

Verna Lee (Nelms) Kelly
January 12, 1925 ~ August 17, 2012

Mrs. Kelly was born January 12, 1925 in Bryan County to Jesse and Ora Lee Nelms.

She was married to Ray Kelly, former Hugo High School teacher and first administrator for the Kiamchi Vo-Tech School, on July 19, 1947.

She lived for over 65 years in Hugo. She graduated from Grant High School in 1942. After attending Draughn's Business College in Dallas, she worked as an extension clerk in the county agents office in Hugo. She also worked for many years as a receptionist for the late Dr. A.L. Fountain. She was a lifetime member of the Hugo chapter of the Mothers Inter Se. Her family and her Jackson Street Church of Christ family were very important to her. Her sisters, Ramona Stillwell of Soper, OK and the late Jesse Gooding were her frequent companions. She always enjoyed cooking, entertaining and reading. Always fashionable, she strived to be a proper lady. Even with Alzheimer's, she always smiled and never complained. Her motto was "It doesn't cost anything to be nice to others."

She is survived by: Carol James and husband Terry of Paris, TX, Gerald Kelly and wife Miriam of The Villages, FL; Grandchildren: John-Paul James and wife Bethany of Bowling Green, KY; Natalie Kelly Porter and husband Chase of Bessemer, AL; Mark Kelly of Houston, TX, and Emily Kelly of Bessemer, AL; Sister: Ramona Stillwell of Soper, OK; Nephews Ronnie Hammock, of Soper, OK and Mark and Gina Hammock of Soper, OK; James Wendall Nelms of Soper, OK; Several great nieces and nephews.

Family would like to extend appreciation to Pine Tree Ranch Assisted Living for their kind help with their Mother for the past two and half years. Also thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice for their care at a difficult time.

Family and friends are invited to sign the guest book or send private condolences to the family at
