Dr. James ("Jim") Keeney, former Woodward resident, passed away Monday, April 12, 2021 at the age of 65. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church in Woodward. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Jim was born February 2, 1956 in Beaver, Oklahoma to Mel and Margaret (Stuart) Keeney. After graduating from Alva High School in 1974, Jim attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University where he graduated with a B.S. in Biology in 1978. He then attended Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa where he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1981.
In March, 1979, Jim married Ava Jo (Thompson) Keeney, and the couple eventually settled in Alva in 1983. In 1985, Jim co-founded Northwest Chiropractic Clinic where he worked for the next 19 years. In addition to his work in the clinic, Jim, or "Doc," as he was known by many of the athletes he treated, served as a team physician for NWOSU athletics, a position he held for roughly 20 years. In 2004, Jim and Ava moved to Woodward where he owned and operated Keeney Chiropractic until he retired in 2016.
On May 16, 2020, Jim was remarried to Sue (Meuser) Keeney, and the couple relocated to Edmond in January, 2021. A lifelong golfer, Jim also enjoyed traveling, attending OSU games and watching his grandsons play ball.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sue (Meuser) Keeney, of the home in Edmond; daughter, Erin Keeney, of Dallas, TX; son, Austin Keeney and wife, Callie, of Edmond, along with his grandsons, Casen Keeney and Cole Keeney; sister, Jennifer Keeney, brother-in-law, Steve Thompson and wife Deanna; sister-in-law Pam Thompson; sister-in-law Kim Thompson; nieces and nephews Jason Thompson, Juston Thompson, Chad Thompson and wife, Mikeena; Stephanie Tellez, Cindy Thompson, Katie Thompson, Letisha Nelson, Michelle Smith, Nicole Soliday, Tyler Hughes and wife, Amanda; Stuart Otis, Emily Otis, and many more grandnieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Margaret (Stuart) Keeney; wife, Ava Jo (Thompson) Keeney; sister, Katherine (Keeney) Hughes; father-in-law, Vance Thompson; mother-in-law, Betty Thompson; brother-in-law, Doug Thompson; and brother-in-law, Jerry Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Jim's honor to the NWOSU Foundation. Donations can be made via check to Billings Funeral Home or online at www.ournorthwestern.org.
