Maxine Julian, of Caddo, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024, in Durant, Oklahoma at the age of 90. She was born on November 24, 1933, in Caddo, Oklahoma, to Mack and Willie Mae (Masters) Dufur. Maxine's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to education and her community.
Maxine's early years in Caddo laid the foundation for a life characterized by learning and teaching. She pursued her passion for education at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Her academic achievements were just the beginning of a long and distinguished career in the field she loved.
For many years, Maxine shaped the minds of young students in the Eufaula, Denison, and Durant Public School systems. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom as she later imparted her knowledge and experience to future educators at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Her influence on the field of education in Oklahoma is immeasurable, and her legacy will live on through the countless students she inspired.
Maxine's professional life was paralleled by her involvement in various associations. She was an esteemed member of Delta Kappa Gamma, where she served as the 2nd Vice President of the Zeta Chapter. Her leadership and vision were invaluable to the organization, and her contributions greatly enriched the lives of her fellow members. Maxine also served as the acquisitions officer on the Board of the Three Valley Museum for more than 15 years. She also assisted in coordinating education programs for all ages.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Maxine was deeply rooted in her faith and community. She was a dedicated member of The First Presbyterian Church of Durant, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Session as an elder, and a moderator of the Christian Education Committee. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and she lived it out through her service and love for others.
She is survived by her loving sister, Sharon Hartman, and her husband, Grady, of Caddo, Oklahoma. Maxine's memory will also be cherished by her numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Willie Mae Dufur, her first husband, Alton Ellis, and her second husband, Ray Julian, as well as her brothers, Bill Dufur and Gordon Dufur, and her sisters, Almazene Straub, and Amarylis Adkins.
Family and friends will gather at her Family Hour on Thursday, August 15, 2024, from 7:00-8:00 p.m., at Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 16, 2024, in the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Mike Manaugh officiating. Maxine will be laid to rest in Restland Cemetery in Roxton, Texas following her funeral service.
