Najibeh Jazzar passed away on August 27, 2016, at the age of 88. She was born on February 9, 1928, in a small village in northern Lebanon.
Her father had to move to Kano, Nigeria to earn a living to support his family. She joined him 10 years later when she was 16. There she would eventually meet Namatallah Jazzar and marry him on May 17, 1947. They were married for 65 years when Namatallah passed away in 2012.
Together they raised seven children in Nigeria but made sure to send them to the best schools throughout the world so they could have the great education that Najibeh and Namatallah were not afforded in their childhood. In Nigeria, Najibeh, ever the enterprising woman, managed the household while running her own business. She oversaw a workshop of dressmakers, tailors and embroiderers and created custom high-end garments that were sold in three boutiques that she established. Her garments were sought by visiting diplomats, tourists and locals and were worn by clients all over the world. After sending some of her children to Oklahoma to be educated, she and Namatallah moved to Norman in 1980 where they eventually started the bakery La Baguette which is still family owned and operated.
Besides being a devoted wife, mother and a savvy businesswoman, Najibeh loved gardening and always maintained a beautiful flower garden and a small herb garden whose crop was always on hand for the various dishes she cooked. Najibeh also loved to look after those who did not have someone to take care of them, especially the elderly. She was always preparing meals and visiting single older ladies, providing them with nourishment, company and especially affection.
Her other commitment was to her faith. Raised as a Maronite Catholic, she was a devout believer. She and Namatallah were among the founding members of Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Norman.
Najibeh is survived by her seven children: Johnny, Eva, Nora, Gerard, Bernard, Richard and Regina; their spouses: Patty, Najib, Hal, Cheryl and Rodolphe; and eight grandchildren: Eric, Tania, Ryan, Angelica, Alex, Carmen, Rana, Cami, and Julian.
Visiting hours are on Friday, September 2, from 6:30 – 8:30pm at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St. Norman, OK 73072. Funeral services will be held at Our Lady of Lebanon on Saturday, September 3, at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in memory of Najibeh to Our Lady of Lebanon Church, 500 Alameda, Norman, OK 73071.
